You Are What You Eat

On Monday, Greyson and I took the 10-Days of Real Food pledge.  Brian and Owen weren't up to discontinuing their Fruity Pebble habit so they did not join us.  Don't even get me started on Fruity Pebbles...sigh.  Anyway, after doing some research and spending 2 1/2 hours at the grocery store on Saturday night (how's that for a great Saturday night to myself? :-)) I can say that we successfully survived the week.....and I honestly have so much more energy than I have in a long long time!  It's amazing!  Greyson's lunch was a wee bit on the sad side today, but he lived to tell about it and now I know how to be better prepared for next week.

I have to say that I am truly amazed at what is in the "healthy" food I had been feeding my family.  Snacks and staples that I thought were good, or at least somewhat good for us, contain so many unknown things or things that are indeed known to cause problems, or have useless fillers, dyes, etc.  I feel ashamed that I didn't do my homework sooner and that I fed my boys things and got them used to the tastes of things that are over processed and contain so many bad ingredients.  Especially Owen.  He has such a sweet tooth and breaking that habit it going to be rough I tell ya!  Last night I made a treat for the boys.  Cookies with honey and dates as the sweetener.  Greyson freaked out when he saw I was using coconut milk and coconut flour - then asked for seconds and made sure I packed one in his lunch today.  Ha!  Or how about the pancakes we had on the school late start morning this week - sweetened with bananas only.  Everyone loved those too, but had hissy fits while they watched me put the banana into the bowl.  Doesn't look like they're suffering to me though.  :-)

The other part I found interesting was the feedback Greyson and I received when we told family and friends what we were planning on doing.  People laughed at us, told me the food would taste horrible, asked if all we'd eat was celery for a week, said it couldn't be done, and implied it wasn't fair to Greyson.  Even Brian was a bit hesitate when I didn't make tacos for dinner last night, but instead served a taco salad buffet.  Yet he was the first one to tell me how good it was.  And Owen about flipped when he saw he wasn't getting his usual taco meal.  Normally all he'd eat is a flour tortilla with sour cream and shredded cheese on it.  Last night....that boy ate lettuce, tried avocado, and had some pico di gallo.

So, Greyson and I have 5 more days to go to finish our pledge, but I can already say that this is a life changer for our family.  One that I can truly feel good about!

Now excuse me while I go find some more recipes.  :-)
